Before childhood came with screens, schedules, and constant supervision, there was summer.
For me, summer meant Terrace Pines Campground, tucked into the Ossipee Mountains of New Hampshire. It meant long days on Dan Hole Pond, bicycles, campfires, penny candy, questionable decisions, and the kind of freedom that would probably terrify parents today.
We disappeared in the morning and came back when we were hungry. We explored the woods, swam until our fingers wrinkled, rode our bikes wherever they would take us, and learned about life largely by living it.
Those summers left behind stories.
Stories of Saturday beer runs in the back of a station wagon. Of discovering Tolkien and suddenly finding a world even bigger than the mountains around me. Of campground characters, family adventures, and childhood schemes that seemed perfectly reasonable at the time. Of the strange annual ritual of Spray Day, when DDT drifted through the campground while kids carried on playing beneath it.
There are quieter memories, too. A small country store. Toasted marshmallows around a fire. A bicycle that represented freedom. Days when Dan Hole Pond seemed like the center of the universe.
And there are darker stories. Tragedy on the lake. Moments that a child witnessed but could only understand years later. Reminders that even the most idyllic childhood landscapes have shadows.
Growing Up North is about family, friendship, freedom, growing up, and the strange way ordinary moments become extraordinary once enough years have passed.
Terrace Pines was our summer home, our playground, and sometimes our entire world.
This is the story of growing up north.

This book has been a long time in the making, over a decade, in fact. During the first year after a cycling accident nearly claimed his life, David A. Grant began journaling as a way to sort through all that encompassed his new life as a traumatic brain injury survivor living with PTSD. All of the first-year journaling eventually became a book of its own when he published Metamorphosis: Surviving Brain Injury in 2012. It remains one of Amazon's top-rated memoirs about life after brain injury.
Over the years, he has often referred to that torturous time as "boot camp." Like a boot camp in a more traditional sense, his trauma pushed him hard to recover, and because of that incessant yearning to rebuild his life, he was able, with a lot of grit and perseverance, to not only survive but to thrive.
In Through the Years, the journey continues. This book is a collection of essays that chronicle his first ten years as a trauma survivor. He continues to write to this day. Chronological in order, readers will read about his early struggles, hardships his wife Sarah and he endured, and unimaginable victories. It represents a very personal journey, one that he hopes brings readers hope.
This book goes beyond just recounting a journey of recovery from a traumatic life experience. It is a real-life tale that takes unexpected twists and turns, with chance meetings that are sure to inspire and amaze readers. It tells the story of triumph and the victory of the human spirit, showcasing the ability to overcome insurmountable odds with dignity, tenacity, and even humor. Those who have experienced traumatic brain injuries, as well as medical professionals, will gain a better understanding of what life is like after such an event.
Regardless of one's current life circumstances, readers will come away from the book with a sense of hope for the future and faith in the inherent goodness of humanity. With accounts of seemingly impossible triumphs and shared heartbreak, readers may even learn a little about themselves along the way. David's brain injury has been a costly one, but he still has the gift of adding richly textured and meaningful words to life experiences. By reading Metamorphosis, Surviving Brain Injury, readers will get an authentic glimpse into what it's like to live with a TBI.
In 2010, the David's life changed forever when he was struck by a teenage driver while cycling in his hometown. The resulting traumatic brain injury led him to chronicle his journey as a survivor, resulting in a collection of written pieces that offer an insider's perspective on life after TBI.
Divided into three segments - Learning to Crawl, Learning to Walk, and Learning to Soar - the essays depict the early struggles, the progress made, and the realization that a meaningful life is possible after a brain injury. Recovery from TBI is lifelong, but the author has learned to coexist with his injury and cherish the good days while enduring the hard ones. Through his writing, he hopes to offer hope and understanding to readers and show that a fulfilling life after TBI is possible.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. While much of the attention may rest on the patient during the acute life-saving and immediate rehabilitation phase, once that patient is stabilized and out of round the clock care, the work of living in a new reality must begin.
